Save Money With Tax Incentives & Rebates
Current Air Conditioner Tax Credits & Incentives
Upgrading your air conditioner to a newer, energy-efficient system isn’t just a wise investment. Missouri residents can also save on a high-efficiency AC with tax credits and incentives. If you want to replace your home’s AC, you may be eligible for federal and local tax rebates. Conserve energy and improve your home while earning money back.
Here, we’ll explain the different tax credits and incentives that may benefit your household when selecting and installing a new air conditioner.
Federal Tax Credits
The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit is a federal tax credit of up to $3,200 for qualifying households. To qualify, you must be a U.S. resident and live in an existing home that you can improve or add onto. Landlords or property managers do not qualify, since the home must be your primary residence.
After Jan. 1, 2023, homeowners can earn this credit, which equals 30% of qualified expenses toward energy-efficient home improvements. Central air conditioning is included on this list for a tax credit of up to $300. However, new installations must meet ENERGY STAR®’s Most Efficient certification.

State & Local Incentives
Missouri residents can earn a $600 tax credit by installing a ductless air conditioning system.
Switching to a ductless mini-split system can save on energy costs long term. They’re also easy to install, so you’ll have flexibility when laying out a space. As a dual heating/cooling unit, they offer greater temperature control in every room.
To qualify for this local incentive, a new ductless air conditioner must have a SEER rating of at least 16 or be a packaged split-ducted AC unit with a SEER rating of at least 15.2.
Manufacturer Rebates
If you’re a customer of Ameren, you may apply for a rebate of up to $700 on central air conditioning. Ameren will help you find a participating contractor and vet your eligibility.
To qualify, you must be an Ameren residential electric customer living in a single-family dwelling or a multifamily building with four or fewer units. For all requirements, refer to Ameren’s rebate guide.
Choosing an Energy-Efficient Air Conditioner
A Metro Heating & Cooling technician or HVAC professional can help you choose the right AC, since only a handful apply for tax credits. We offer free estimates for all new systems.
Any qualifying AC must meet a specific SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient the equipment. Missouri residents can claim 30% of project cost, or up to $600 toward installation, on split systems with a SEER score of 16 or more.
We work with all major brands and carriers, so we’re happy to contact a manufacturer to find out if specific equipment applies.
How To Claim Tax Credits on Air Conditioners
There are a few steps when applying for federal rebates or local tax credits.
For a federal credit from the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit, you’ll need to:
- File form 5695, the “Residential Energy Credits Part II,” with your tax return. Credit must be claimed for the tax year the equipment is installed.
- Use form 5695 to declare any residential clean energy credit from 2024.
- Carry the unused portion of the residential clean energy credit to 2025.
