9 Summer Energy Saving Tips to Save You Money

Everyone wants to save more money, but not everyone wants to sweat while doing chores around the house during the summer. If you want to save more money this summer and live in a comfortable home, these nine summer energy saving tips to save you money are just for you.

Save Money This Summer With These 9 Energy Saving Tips

1.) Replace your air conditioner – Now we know not all homeowners want or have the excess savings to replace their air conditioner willy-nilly, but a complete air conditioner replacement can significantly reduce your energy bills and save you money for years to come.

New air conditioner models have SEER ratings of 18 or higher, meaning they are already more energy-efficient than models that are 15, 10, and even five years ago.

2.) Use your ceiling fans properly – Did you know that ceiling fans circulate both clockwise and counter-clockwise? During the summer it’s important make sure the ceiling fans in your home are rotating clockwise. Ceiling fans rotating clockwise pull air from the floor up to the ceiling, creating a draft and breeze-like feeling in the room.

Using ceiling fans can help you reduce the amount of time your air conditioner runs and will help reduce your electricity bills during the summer.

3.) Close windows, blinds, and curtains – A lot of homeowners leave their blinds and curtains open during the summer, and for good reason! Indoor plants need ample lighting, but the hot sunlight glaring through your windows can cause your home to heat up quickly.

We recommend closing all windows, blinds, and curtains to keep sunlight out during the hottest hours of the day. Doing so will prevent your home from getting too hot, allowing you to save more energy and reduce cooling costs.

4.) Set your thermostat wisely – To save energy and money during the summer, set your home’s thermostat as high as comfortably possible. The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall cooling costs will be.

5.) Turn your thermostat down if leaving for more than 48 hours – A lot of families take vacation during the summer. At the very least, a long weekend at the beach or heading to an amusement park for a weekend may call for you to change your thermostat settings.

To save money and energy during the summer, raise your thermostat setting when leaving your home for 48 hours or more. Doing so can increase cooling costs and help you save money.

6.) Create a draft – In the evenings when temperatures are cooler, consider opening windows on opposite sides of your home. Doing so allows air to circulate more easily and create a draft, keeping your home nice and cool.

If you have screen doors in the front or leading to a back patio, consider taking advantages of the cool evenings to save energy and money!

7.) Save chores for the evening – If you need to clean your home, run the dishwasher, or clean clothes, save all of these activities for the evening. Running major appliances during the hottest time of the day increases the temperature in your home.

8.) Use the stove as little as possible – In addition to washers, dryers, or dishwashers, the stove is a major contributor to heat in your home. During the summer, save energy on cooling costs and try to cook meals using other alternatives like:

  • Grills
  • Microwaves
  • Toaster ovens

9.) Get an AC tune up – One of the most important things you can do to save energy this summer is to schedule an air conditioner tune up during the spring. Calling your local HVAC contractor for a full checkup can help catch any troublesome issues before peak cooling season and save you money on future repairs.

In addition to spotting minor issues, an air conditioner tune up from a professional air conditioner repair specialist can help your system run more efficiently and save you money during the summer.
